August 14 – Thinking Spiritually about Education, Athletics, and Competition

This week, we’ll explore the topic “Thinking Spiritually about Education, Athletics, and Competition” through readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, songs, prayer, questions, discussion, and the sharing of personal experiences.

With school and sports camps starting, many people have education and athletics on their mind.  There are several phrases in the Bible which might point our thought in the right direction in thinking about these topics:

  • Run the straight race
  • Fight the good fight
  • Keep the faith
  • Go for the gold

Questions to consider:

  • Do education and athletics have to be so competitive?  What is competition?  Is it good or bad?
  • It seems that in education and athletics there are so few prizes for the “winners” – how can we all be winners?
  • Is there a way to spiritualize these concepts?
  • Are we working towards a corruptible (temporary) or incorruptible (permanent) crown?
  • How do we combat feelings of failure which seem so pervasive these days?

We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on how you have overcome obstacles with education and athletics, or any other subject you care to bring to the group.

If you can’t make it to Prayer and Share, please post your ideas on the Next Generation Fellowship Facebook page and/or email me your ideas to share.
