This week, we’ll explore the topic of “Church” through readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, songs, prayer, questions, discussion, and the sharing of personal experiences.
On page 144 of Miscellaneous Writings, Mary Baker Eddy says, “The church, more than ay other institution, at present is the cement of society, and it should be the bulwark of civil and religious liberty. Gut the time cometh when the religious element, or Church of Christ, shall exist alone in the affections, and need no organization to express it. Till then, this form of godliness seems as requisite to manifest its spirit, as individuality to express Soul and substance”
Questions and thoughts to consider:
- In 1894 when the cornerstone of the Mother Church was laid, Mrs. Eddy wrote some brief remarks. The above quote is part of those remarks. You might want to read the whole address (a short 2 pages) for the context. What do you think she was trying to say to us then and now?
- How has your sense of church become more spiritual and less material over your years of study and spiritual growth? Another way to ask this is: How have you been progressively healed of a limited and material sense of church? Can you share some milestones in your development
- How do you distinguish between the meaning of religion and spirituality?
- What do you think was Jesus’ sense of church?
If you can’t make it to Prayer and Share, please post your ideas on the Next Generation Fellowship Facebook page and/or email me your ideas to share. Thoughts and testimony related to other topics are always welcome as well.
We hope to see you Wednesday night at 7:30 in the Sunday School. Friends and family are welcome!
